1) Install the Google Custom Search plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-custom-search-for-wordpress/
2) Create a static page, not post, and insert the custom search box following the instructions from the plugin.
3) Change Dashboard > Settings > Reading > Select A Static Page > Pick your new search page from the list box. Now your blog’s home page will be your search page.
