Can I edit a wordpress theme whilst using a different under construction theme? I would like to use a wordpress theme saying under construction. However I was wondering if it was possible to edit a different theme whilst keeping the under constuction one up?

Thanks, Carla. I didn’t realize there was a plugin for that. Thanks for sharing.
I figured it out, but by activating a Maintenance PlugIn. The problem with setting the static page alone is that, as I’m experimenting with different themes in my sandbox, site visitors can see that as well. With the maintenance plug-in however, visitors see a standard under construction page (with my personalized note) and I see the sandbox. Thanks again for taking the time to help. C.
Just followed your directions. Thanks!
@Carla, that’s not how it goes. Don’t install anything in sub-directories. You install WordPress on your domain right were you plan on keeping it. Then you create a new page, not post. Make it your under construction page. Write whatever you want on it. In fact, call it Under Construction. Then go into Settings > Reading > tic the Static Page radio button and select that Under Construction page from the list. It will act as the placeholder for the front page.
The rest of the blog will function as usual and you can sandbox all you want on it. You can remove any widgets from the sidebars so ppl don’t have access to what you’re working on. Then just set the Reading options back to ‘Your latest posts’ when you’re done.
I’m a newbie and I want to be clear: So when building a site and you want an “under construction” placeholder for visitors to the URL of the future live site, do two WP installs to two separate subdirectories. One functions solely as the placeholder, the other as your sandbox. Is that right?
I installed WP on a subdirectory. I’ve spent most of the day trying to figure out how to set up a placeholder on the URL of the eventual live site WHILE also being able to play in my sandbox. Please help.
You can only have one active theme at a time so I’m not sure what editing a different one has to do with anything.
You can create a new page, not post. Make it your under construction page. Then go into Settings > Reading > tic the Static Page radio button and select your under construction page for the front page. Then just set it back when you’re done. However, you’re blog’s still going to be operational.
However, being a programmer in a former life, you don’t want to develop in production data. Go set up a sandbox to play in. Do a second install of WordPress in a different folder and go play with your theme in there. Just set the privacy so the search engines don’t find it. Do that in Settings > Privacy.
Also, VERY IMPORTANT!!!! Before you start tweeking on the theme, make a backup copy of it.
